    What is erectile dysfunction?

    Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

    • High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other heart related issues

    • Multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and other muscle or nerve disorders

    Erectile dysfunction can also be a side effect of injuries sustained to the pelvic area or spinal cord. It can also be a side effect of some surgeries in the penile and pelvic area as well as a side effect to certain potent medications.

    • Problems with relationships

    ED can be caused by a combination of physical and psychological factors. In most cases, there is not one single thing that lead to ED or made one man more prone to it than another. It is usually a combination of several physical and psychological criteria coming together to result in symptoms of erectile dysfunction. This is why the condition can be difficult to treat at first and why many men are reluctant to talk about the issues with their spouse or doctor- they themselves don’t even understand what is going on so how are they supposed to talk to someone else about it?     Risk Factors for ED

    Men with diabetes, blood disorders, or heart conditions are generally found to be at a higher risk for developing symptoms of ED. Additionally, men who use tobacco, drink alcohol in excess, or are seriously overweight also see a marked increase in their risk for ED. Other risk factors men need to be aware of include:

    • Taking certain medications- antihistamines, prescription strength pain pills, blood pressure drugs, chemo drugs, radiation treatments, and antidepressants are the worst culprits
    • Prostate surgery or other surgeries done in the penile area or on the spine
    • Injury to the penis, the groin, and the nerves or muscles in these areas as that all directly affects the ability to get or maintain an erection
    • Abusing drugs or alcohol, using illegal drugs, and excessive smoking
    • Stress, anxiety, depression and other psychological factors

    Some work situations and hobbies can also contribute to ED symptoms or make them worse. These include activities that put pressure on the groin or penal area such as bike riding or holding laptops on your lap for long periods of time.
